How to set up family sharing on iPhone or iPad: As everyone knows iPhone has a lot of amazing features which was not effectively used by users. Today we are going to discuss one of those i.e. family sharing.

What is Family Sharing?

Family sharing is one of the features of the iPhone that allows you to share iTunes, Apple Books, App Store Purchases, Apple Music subscription, and iCloud storage plans with your family member that too without sharing your accounts.

When the family organizer turns on purchase sharing you can pay for family purchases with the same credit card. Suppose, you have children in your group you can set limitations for them like parents have to approve their purchases.

There is a limitation to this feature that is you can add up to six members only. The second limitation is you can be a part of only one family group at a time. And one more thing, you are allowed to create new family groups only twice a year not more than that.

How To Set Up Family Sharing on iPhone

  • You need an Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes
  • An iPhone with iOS 8 or above

SetUp a Family Group

One member will be creating a group for Family Sharing on their iPhone and this member will be the organizer. While creating a family sharing group you have to turn on family purchases.

If you are turning this on you have confirmed the conditions and must have a valid credit or debit card. So, now follow the steps below to initiate the process:

  • Go to Settings > Your Name. For iOS 10.2 or earlier users Settings > iCloud.

 

  • Once you clicked on your name then tap on Set Up Family Sharing > Get Started.
  • Follow the instruction to set up your family and invite your family members.

 

  • For iOS 11 or above users, choose the features first you’d like to share with your family. After this follow the instructions to invite your family members using iMessage.

Invite People to Join Your Family

You can add anyone who is having Apple ID and iOS 8 and above to your family.  To add members below 13 you have uses different steps. If you are adding someone with 18 above age and having Apple ID follow the steps below:

  • Go to Settings > Your Name. For iOS 10.2 or earlier users Settings > iCloud.
  • Once you clicked on your name then tap on Set Up Family Sharing > Get Started.
  • Follow the instruction to set up your family and invite your family members.

 

  • For iOS 11 or above users, choose whether you want to send invites via iMessage or to invite in person. According to your need follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: To check the status of whether a family member joined or not you can check under the person’s name.

Join a Family Group

Accept or decline is up to the member-only and can be done through the device. You’ll get an invitation sent to you by email or in a text message and you can respond to that.

If you didn’t find email and message don’t worry you can accept through the device also. Follow the steps below to join a family group:

  • Go to Settings > Your Name > Invitations. If you are using iOS 10.2 and below Settings > iCloud > Invitations

Start Sharing

Once your family member accepted your invite the feature of Family Sharing is set up on everyone’s device. Now you can check the complete list below which you are allowed to share:

  • Downloaded movies, music, TV shows, books, and apps from iTunes, App Store.
  • You can get Apple Music Family Subscription and then invite family members to join.
  • Family Calendar, Photos, and Videos
  • iCloud Storage Plan
  • Use Find My Friends app to share your location with your family members.
  • Use Find My iPhone app to find family members’ device.
